Mary Edith Grace Gash Hammett, age 90, formerly of Orange Park, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home in Westminster Village, Dover, Delaware, on June 2, 2017. She had lived there 9 years.
Mrs. Hammett was born April 6, 1927, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Margaret L. Gash. She married John W. Hammett in San Antonio on August 5, 1945. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John W. and son John Thomas Hammett, of Tacoma, Washington. She is survived by her daughter Jonalyn Louise (Robert) Chagaris of Magnolia, Delaware; Scott Lee Hammett (Beth) of Cornelius, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Mary will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. Her ready smile, open personality, and love of people graced her life and those around her. She loved to sing and shared her gift by joining the choir in each church she attended, beginning in her teens. As an army wife, Mary traveled with her husband and children to Germany and Ethiopia, and many, many states in between. She never failed to find life exciting and fulfilling. She has passed on a devotion to family and love of friends that will warm the hearts of those who remember her.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Pippin Funeral Home in Camden-Wyoming, Delaware, Sunday, June 4 at 3 pm. Friends may call on the family at 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, Orange Park, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in her memory to Westminster Village Employee Appreciation Fund of Dover, Delaware, or Seasons Hospice of Wilmington, Delaware.
