William Wright Obituary

William B. Wright, 92, passed away on September 25, 2023, at Country Rest Home in Greenwood. He was born to Herbert S. And Mary E. (Dempsey) Wright on August 17, 1931, in West Chester, PA.

He was a very positive and personable man. Most of his friends would know him as “Tojo” because he looked a lot like the Japanese WWII war criminal when he was a young man. He was one of a kind and always had a joke to tell. He had many funny T-shirts, he had an iconic belt buckle, and if you were lucky, he would show you a photo of his “Pride and Joy”.

He was hard-working, and often had two jobs. He started working as a shoeshine boy when he was 8 years old and then went on to be a paper boy when he was 12. He honorably served in the Army from 1949-1953. He worked at Playtex, where he met the love of his life. He then worked for Leeds Travelwear. He worked for the Secretary of State in Dover as a Controller. He retired from the State of Delaware as an administrator in 1988. For most of his working years and into his retirement, he did taxes and had clients return to him year after year. He had many other jobs after retiring and worked most recently at County Bank in Longneck and then in Milford. He enjoyed life thoroughly and always found a way to laugh even if it was a bad day. He made a friend everywhere he went because he set their minds at ease with his persistent humor. He always said not to worry, because things have a funny way of working out.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Wendy B. Stephens; his older sisters Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Perry and Katherine (Kitty) Phillips.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sally M. Wright; son William Wright Jr. (Terri); daughter Megan Wright; grandchildren Matthew Stephens (Brittany); Jon Wright (Jackie); Noah and Abigail F., and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. A Celebration of Life will be forthcoming.
