Wayne Leon Brewington, Sr.

     Wayne L. Brewington, Hartly, Delaware, son of Eleanor Brewington Gaines (deceased) and James A. Masten (deceased), departed this life on June 29, 2026. He was born May 11, 1946 in Greenwood, Delaware.  Wayne was the oldest of ten (10) siblings, three brothers and seven sisters.  He was preceded in death by three sisters, Rita, Eldora Ailleen and Elnora Colleen Higgins.

      Wayne was educated in the Greenwood, DE School System attending Greenwood School #222. He graduated from William C. Jason High School, Georgetown, Delaware in 1964. Shortly after graduating, he joined the U.S. Army on September 3, 1964. He served honorably for two years, receiving several citations, awards and decorations; including the National Defense Service Medal for honorable active duty during designated conflict periods and the Army Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge.  

     Wayne married Jane E. Adams on June 15, 1968. They celebrated almost 51 years of marriage, before her passing on May 27, 2019. To this union three children were born, Nanette (Faye) Brewington Harris, Wayne L. Brewington, Jr, and Steven J. Brewington. He was preceded in death by both Faye and Wayne Jr.

     After the military, Wayne continued his service through a 39-year career as a federal civil service employee. He worked at the Dover Air Force Base, Dover, DE commissary with the 436th Aerial Port Squadron before retiring in 2006.

     During his time working at the Base, Wayne met and mentored/coached several of the young Airmen. He enjoyed cooking for them and opened his home to them, as their “home away from home”.  He became particularly close with three, who he considered his Godsons: Fred McKoy Jr; Gordon Gilis and Ordenna Willis.

     Wayne was a member of the Walter L. Fox American Legion Post #2 for 31 years. In addition, he was a lifetime member of Prudence Lodge #6, Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons of Delaware and Its Jurisdiction, Inc., for more than 50 years. In recognition for his dedication and continued commitment, he was bestowed the honor of Honorary Past Master of Prudence Lodge #6.  

     Wayne leaves to cherish his memory his son Steven Brewington, Dover DE (Alicia); six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers Stanley Higgins Jr, Philadelphia, PA and Terry Higgins, Portland, OR; four sisters: Karen V. Higgins, New Castle, DE; Christine Higgins and Estella Hines, Wilmington DE; and Jacquline Ashford (Michael) of Millsboro, DE; brother-in-law Richard Adams (Barbara), of London, England; four sister’s-in-law: Elizabeth LeCompte, Wilmington, DE; Alice Harmon, Virginia Beach, VA; Lorraine Bechman, Sacramento, CA; Valerie Poppel (Gerhard), Dagsboro, DE; three Godsons: Fred McKoy Jr (Roshalle) of Clinton, MD, Gordon Gilis of Harrington, DE, and Ordenna Willis (Lynn) of Puyallup, WA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends. 

     There will be a viewing from 9:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July15, 2026 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934.  From 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., F. & A.M.PHA Prudence Lodge #6 will conduct a Masonic service. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.  Online condolences may be made via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
