Ruthann Melvin Obituary

Mrs. Ruthann Melvin, age 80, of Camden-Wyoming, Delaware, attained her lifelong goal of meeting her precious Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Ruthann was born October 16th, 1944, to the late Charles William and Irene Eva Johnson in Detroit, Michigan. From a young age, Ruthann was taught about the Lord spending many days and nights in the church even playing church with family and friends putting on her own sermons and singing while most girls her age were playing dolls.

In late 1966, Ruthann was asked to be in her cousin’s wedding in Michigan. Little did she know of the plan the Lord had because it was there she met the love of her life, J. Carl Melvin, who would travel there to also be in the same wedding. After only 3 dates and 3 months, Ruthann packed up the life she knew in the big city and moved here embracing the small town country life. She took on the responsibility of being a farmer’s wife and as the operation grew so did her knowledge and roles. From helping with chores, to keeping the books and being the first Uber driver moving workers, food and parts to wherever they were needed at a moments notice. She took great pride in ensuring things ran smoothly.

Along with helping run the family farm business, Ruthann was known for her beautiful cakes. She took great joy in creating and providing many family and friends with beautiful cakes for their special occasions. Family always looked forward to upcoming birthdays to get some of “grandma’s icing”.

Cooking was one of the many hobbies Ruthann enjoyed. The kitchen often smelled of fresh homemade pizzas, creamed chipped beef, homemade strawberry jam, applesauce, sugar and no-bake cookies. Family gatherings were always a time to enjoy some of her amazing recipes.

Children were a huge part of her life as Ruthann always wanted a large family. After raising three children of her own, she went on to provide care for not only her grandchildren, but also some of her great-grandchildren as well as the children of family friends. She doted over every one of them spending time teaching them about the Lord. Time at “grandma’s house” was always special.

The legacy of her faith and love of the Lord Jesus will be felt through the generations of her family. She was a servant of God singing His praises even in her final days.

Ruthann is survived by her wonderful husband of 57 years, J. Carl Melvin; her children Lisa (Chris) Todd, Robin (Allan) Warnick and Bryan (Madonna) Melvin, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, and her brother Charles (Anna) Johnson, one niece and one nephew.

She is proceeded in death by her parents Charles and Irene Johnson and her great-grandchild, Briella Warnick.

A viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2024 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming.
