Ruth Charlotte Shomo (nee Kirby) born January 11,1930 went home to the Lord on June 20th 2025. Ruth was born in Mullens, WV to the late Ruby Kirby (nee Fleeman) and Robert W. Kirby Sr. She was the baby of the family and last survivor. Her predeceased siblings were Brothers R.W. Kirby Jr., Philip C. Kirby, and her sister Mary Helen Kirby.
Ruth was a graduate of Brenau college in Georgia, where she obtained a BA in music education. She taught elementary students and private piano lessons.
She was the choir director for her church in Pearisburg, VA where she met her future husband (Ronald E. Shomo, Sr.) who was a substitute organist. She decided to go out with him and because he was younger and had a funny last name, she told her sister that she would go out with him, it wasn’t like they were going to marry him! Their marriage lasted 63.5 years until his death in 2022!
Ruth enjoyed her family, Son Ronald Shomo, Jr., (favorite daughter-in-law Kim Shomo) daughter Nannette Wright, her, favorite son-in-law Glenn Wright) and grandchildren Ann Shomo, Alan Shomo (wife Thora), Samantha Wright (partner Vicente), Bryan Wright, Jessica Ashby (husband Mark), Stephanie Fenton, great grandchild Marky Ashby, great grandchild due in August, Emily Ruth Shomo.
Ruth enjoyed music and played the piano up to a few months before her passing. She travelled all over the world with Ron Sr. with the All American Youth Homor Band and Chorus each summer and was a huge supporter of the DHS band that her husband directed.
Ruth will be missed by all.
