Richard Wayne Kauffman was born August 4, 1954 to Willard and Elizabeth Kauffman in Northville, Michigan. His family moved to a farm in Harrington, Delaware in 1955. He attended Greenwood Mennonite School until 10th grade, then graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High school in 1972 where he was active in track and basketball.
After graduating from high school, Richard worked for Warfel Construction until 1986 when he began dairy farming, in addition to raising chickens, beef cows, and hay. He also enjoyed helping his grandchildren with a variety of farm animals. He met his wife Janet at a cousin’s wedding and they were married on August 9, 1975. They worked together on their farm in Harrington, DE and raised three children together, Eric, Becky, and Anita.
For many years, Richard was active in MDS(Mennonite Disaster Service), leading crews and volunteering to help repair and rebuild homes for those who had been impacted by natural disasters. He was a member of Greenwood Mennonite Church in Greenwood, DE.
Richard was reunited with his wife in heaven on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. He is survived by his three children: Eric Kauffman and his wife Sarah, of Mifflinburg PA, Becky Wright and her husband Andy of Harrington DE, and Anita Martin and her husband Keith also of Harrington DE, two brothers: Arthur Kauffman and his wife Sue, and Willard Kauffman and his wife Tammi, two sisters: Judy Holleger and her husband Rick, and Grace Scott and her husband Kevin, all of Harrington DE, and fourteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Janet, and his parents, Willard and Elizabeth Kauffman.
Richard was devoted to his family. His children and grandchildren were the pride of his life. His greatest joy was supporting his grandchildren in their endeavors, on the farm raising animals, at numerous athletic events, as well as musical and drama performances. He possessed a big heart and loved people well, encouraging, supporting, and respecting people regardless of their uniqueness or differing opinions.
A memorial service will be held on April 27, 2025 at Greenwood Mennonite Church, 12650 Mennonite School Road, Greenwood, Delaware where family and friends may gather to celebrate his life. Visitation hours will begin at 2:00pm, with the service starting at 4:00pm.
