Marlene Clements Obituary

Marlene died at Courtland Manor Nursing Home in Dover, DE. on December 2, 2024.

Marlene was born on March 17, 1942 in Easton, PA to Herbert Schoen and Mary Helen Wasser Schoen and graduated as Valedictorian from Wilson Junior-Senior High School.  She attended and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA in 1964 having been elected to the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society, Beta Beta Beta the national Biology honor society, and to Psi Chi the national Psychology honor society upon her graduation. Following her graduation she taught at the Eisenhower Elementary School in Gettysburg. Her marriage during this time produced Jennifer and Andrew Packard.

After her divorce she enrolled in the Nursing Program at York College of Pennsylvania from which program she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in 1983, having been elected to Sigma Theta Tau the national honor society of nursing.  During this time she married David Clements and became stepmother to David, III and Clayton. 

After working at two Baltimore area hospitals Marlene became the Director of Student Health at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and was the faculty sponsor of the campus Gay and Lesbian Coalition, helped develop the campus Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and was elected the President of the Mid-Atlantic College Health Association, a consortium of about 200 area colleges.  During this time she obtained her Master’s Degree in 1989 having graduated Magma Cum Laude from the University of Maryland College of Medicine in Baltimore, MD.

Upon leaving Western Maryland she moved to the Franklin Square Hospital Center where she became a member of the Internal Medicine Primary Care Outpatient staff and, having earned her certification as a Certified Registered Adult Nurse Practitioner, took on her own patient load.  She also was named a faculty member of the Internal Medicine Residency Program for which she developed a Women’s Health Curriculum that eventually earned her recognition as a Maryland Health Care Hero in nursing in 2008.

Following retirement she and her husband moved to Dover, DE where she currently lived.  Marlene is survived by her husband David and her children Jennifer Okeson and Andrew Packard and her stepchildren David III and Clayton as well as five grandchildren, Brenna and Carly Okeson, Madison and Parker Clements and Landon Packard.
