Maralyn "Sookie" Smith Obituary

Maralyn Smith, “Sookie” age 86 of Dover, Delaware went home to be with the Lord, December 28, 2021 at Kent General Hospital.  “Sookie” as she was known by all who loved her, was born June 28, 1935 in Dover, Delaware.

Sookie held many meaningful jobs within her community including Playtex, and Perdue Chicken Factory. She also worked for several years as a housekeeper at various locations, including her time employed at Wesley College in Dover, DE. Although Sookie officially retired around 1997, she continued to work to remain busy and active; holding a position at Fleischer’s Bakery for some years.

Sookie’s passion was her family, especially her great-grandchildren. Her family remembers her as being a protector to the children when they were in trouble. Guarding them from discipline, and spoiling them with sweets, snacks, and a few dollars every time she saw them. Sookie loved watching game shows on television and when able, attended Crossroads Church of Dover.  Everyone in the neighborhood affectionately called her “Mom-Mom.”

Maralyn Smith joins in everlasting life her parents, Thomas & Gertrude Summers; her brother, Donald Johnson; her sister, Grace Griffin; her husband, Kenneth Smith; her grandson, Stephen Drew Jr. and her son-in-law, Stephen Drew, Sr.

Maralyn Smith leaves to cherish her memory, her three loving daughters, Beverly Bordley (Steven), Karen Tucker (Charles) and Cynthia Drew; one sister, Elizabeth Rivers of Victorville, CA; one sister-in-law, Minnie Johnson of Smyrna, DE; 8 grandchildren, Takeisha and Kennard Smith, Benita Bonner, Nika Reid, Tamika Drew, Christina Boyer, Catherine Simmons, and Claudia Drew; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
