Our beloved Louis Joseph DeVita passed away comfortably at Bayhealth Hospital in Milford, DE on Sunday, November 24th at the age of 84 due to complications from a stroke. He was born in Melrose, MA to Pasquale and Joanna DeVita, raised in Wakefield, MA and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy High School.
Lou took ownership of the family business, DeVita’s Flower Gardens in Wakefield, MA, from 1962 to 1982 where he oversaw wholesale rose and carnation production and retail operations for a large-scale garden center serving Wakefield and the surrounding communities. Lou’s outgoing personality and his commitment to quality made DeVita’s Flower Gardens a renowned and respected business in the region.
After selling the garden center, Lou spent over three decades in the retail auto industry eventually making his way to Delaware where he met and married Elaine. They were married for 21 years. Lou’s big heart and generous nature made it easy for Elaine’s children, Barron and Beth, to adopt Lou as one of their own. He was a loving grandfather to Travis, Robert and Parker.
Lou’s gregarious energy was infectious, he loved to entertain and meals were his perfect social activity. He always had a pot of coffee ready for visitors. He could break out in song wherever and whenever, spreading good cheer to anyone he met.
Lou is survived by his wife, Elaine (Japinoski) DeVita of Milford, DE, his two sons, Michael DeVita of Gloucester, MA and Stephen DeVita of Golden, CO, his sister Ann Michaels of Selbyville, DE, his three grandchildren Breanna DeVita of Brooklyn, NY, Olivia DeVita of Austin, TX and Michelina DeVita of Gloucester, MA and many loving relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pasquale and Joanna DeVita and his sister Frances Doyle.
Lou has requested that no services be held on his behalf. However, you may send letters of consolation to the family via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
