Larry Weis Obituary

On Thursday, May 9th, 2019, my father, Lawrence, “Larry” George Weis, lost his 5-year, courageous battle with cancer at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Delaware. He was surrounded by numerous friends and family at the time of his passing. He was 64-years-old. He resided in Viola, DE on East Evens Rd. since 1990 with his wife, only child, and numerous cats, dogs, birds, mice, hamsters, turtles and fish.

Larry was born On February 16th, 1955 in the state of New Jersey to the late George Weis and the late Barbara (Thompson) Weis. He attended Catholic school at Holy Cross for 12 years and graduated in 1973. He married my mother on September 9th, 1977.

He was preceded in death by his aforementioned father and mother, as well as his stepmother 30+ years, Margaret, “Peg,” Jennings-Weis. He is survived by his wife of 41-years, Lorna Wood Weis of Viola, DE, his daughter Tessa Weis of Viola, DE, his 8-year-old granddaughter, Clara Anne Weis of Harrington, DE and his pets, a cat named “Sophie,” and a granddog called, :Seamus.”; his sister Mary Weis Bradley and her husband William Bradley, both of Dover, DE; his nephew Branden Bradley and his niece, Jennifer Bradley; and his great-nieces and nephew, Harper Bradley and Connor Bradley, both of Dover, DE and Feyona Bradley who currently resides in the state of Arizona; his brother Thomas Weis and sister-in-law, Lisa Weis and their two sons, Matthew and Nicholas Weis, all of Dover, DE; his father-in law, Edward Wood of Dover, DE; and his oldest sister, Nancy Weis of Newark, DE.

Larry loved to garden, especially when it came to growing delicious tomatoes and beautiful rose bushes. He enjoyed bird-watching, especially blue birds, cardinals, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds. He loved to watch the variety of birds and other small, local wildlife that came to feast at the feeders he meticulously kept, even when he was very ill; he was particularly fond of a squirrel he lovingly called, “Taco.” In his 20’s and 30’s he was an avid deer, goose and duck hunter, as well as a successful fisherman. Once retired, he began an E-Bay store where he genuinely enjoyed running his little business and selling a little bit of everything, but particularly board game pieces, Lego figurines, Native-American artifacts and other collectibles.

He spent many fun-filled hours with his daughter, Tess. Together they enjoyed fishing, hiking, boating, gardening, playing Nintendo and card games, practicing for her softball games (where he acted as a very popular coach for several years), scouring for deals and yummy treats at Spence’s Bazaar and cheering quite loudly at her swimming and track meets!

Despite his many interests and hobbies, when it really came down to it though, he did not discover his true passion and joy for life until he met his beautiful and intelligent granddaughter, Clara Anne on January 6th, 2011. Together they loved playing old-school Nintendo games, roughhousing, going to Air Shows, building Legos and watching the birds and squirrels together

He worked for over 20 years at C.T. Film, in Harrington, DE as a quality-control manager where he was beloved by his employees. Once retired, he worked part-time for several years at Wal-Mart in the hardware department until he was diagnosed with colon cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Pippin Funeral Home at 119 W.
