Joyce Gasper Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend, Joyce Gasper, who peacefully passed away on July 2, 2026, at the age of 82.

Joyce was born on February 14, 1944, in Dover, Delaware, to the late Harold and Virginia Short. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Teresa Martinez, and her sister, Phyllis Ann Mace.

She leaves behind her daughter, Karen Gasper; her grandchildren, Guillermo Martinez, Christopher Hurd, Michelle Martinez, Tiffany Martinez, and Austin Gasper; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and countless extended family members and friends whose lives were made better simply by knowing her.

To know Joyce was to know someone whose greatest joy in life was her family. She loved deeply, worried endlessly, and never stopped doing everything she could to make sure the people she loved were okay. Whether it was offering advice, lending a helping hand, or simply being there when someone needed her, her family always came first. There was nothing that made her prouder than watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow.

Joyce also shared a special bond with her faithful dog, Molly, who was never far from her side and brought her constant companionship and unconditional love.

She found happiness in the simple things. She loved her home and spending time in her yard and was always finding another project to tackle around the house. She took tremendous pride in keeping a beautiful, spotless home. If you stopped by while Elvis Presley was playing, chances are Joyce was happily cleaning, singing along, and making sure everything was just the way she liked it. Those moments became part of who she was and are memories we will forever cherish.

Joyce was also blessed with many wonderful friends whom she loved dearly. The friendships she built over the years meant so much to her, and she treasured every visit, conversation, and laugh they shared.

While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the many wonderful memories she leaves behind. Her strength, kindness, determination, and unconditional love will continue to guide us, and we will carry her with us always.

Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at Delaware Hospice for the compassionate care, comfort, and dignity they provided to our mother during her final days. Their kindness meant more to our family than words can express.

In keeping with Joyce's wishes, a private memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Kent County SPCA, an organization Joyce faithfully supported for many years. It is a fitting way to honor her lifelong love of animals and continue the compassion she so freely gave throughout her life.
