James “Jim” Schilling, of Felton, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2023, surrounded by his family after battling Progressive Supra-nuclear Palsy (PSP) for 6 years. Jim was born in Mobridge, SD on January 31, 1948, and grew up in Akaska, SD. He was the son of the late Harold and Henrietta Lorraine (Sulzle) Schilling.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1966 after graduating from Selby High School and served in Vietnam. Jim would go on to proudly serve in the Air Force as a civilian and reservist at Dover Air Force Base for a total of 37 years reaching the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and received numerous medals and awards, retiring in 2006. After retirement Jim continued his civic duty by volunteering at the Johnson Victrola Museum in Dover, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church and the Delaware Vietnam Veteran’s Chapter 850, to name a few. He enjoyed helping people, going on walks, singing, playing his guitar, dancing, watching baseball and football, traveling, and being a top-notch handyman. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and a true friend. We will always remember Jim’s impish grin, beautiful smile, contagious laugh and kind heart.
Jim is survived by his wife, Wendy, son Brian (Kara), daughter Tracy (Bill), brothers Roy (Mary) and Duane, step sisters Lila Simon, Carol Lehrkamp, and Belle Rae Sieber, grandchildren Blake, Riley, Harrison, Rhys and Eloise. As well as his parents, he was also predeceased in death by his sister, Twyla (Schilling) Chase, and step mother Dollie Schilling.
Services will be held Friday, January 13, 2023 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 425 North DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 with visitation at 9:30am and service at 11:00am. Luncheon to follow in the Great Hall. Burial will be on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, Jim’s 75th birthday, at the Veterans Cemetery in Bear, DE at 2:00pm.
