James Joseph Meadowcroft, Sr., of Magnolia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, September 24, 2021, in his home. He was 89.
James was born May 14, 1932 on Staten Island, New York, to the late, Raymond & Ethel(Van Pelt) Meadowcroft. He served proudly in the United States Air Force, and is a Korean War Veteran; and in the United States Army Reserves for over 25 years. Upon completion of his active duty, James worked as a welder at the Bethlehem Shipyard, and worked for Otis Elevator in New York City, before joining the New York City Police Department, where he served for over 21 years.
James was a member of the Police Benevolent Association, N.Y.C., and received many honors while serving the community. He was also a member of the Cpl.Allan F. Kivlehan Chapter, Korean War Veterans; and the Emerald Society of the New York Police Department.
James was a loving family man, and participated enthusiastically in his childrens and grandchildrens lives, coaching both baseball & softball. He loved music, was an avid reader of historical novels. He loved the outdoors, liked to exercise, do yoga, and in his later years arts & crafts, gardening, and taking pictures.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 children, Donna, Michael, and James,Jr., 2 brothers, Raymond & Robert Meadowcroft; and a grandson, Patrick McManus.
James is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia(Holden) Meadowcroft; 4 children, Elizabeth Meadowcroft, of Magnolia; Terence Meadowcroft & wife, Lisa, of Metuchen, N.J.; Gerard Meadowcroft, of Staten Island, N.Y.; and Kelly Adams & husband, Mike, of Magnolia. His brother, John Foley; 12 grandchildren, Devon, Brooke, Paige, Todd, Alex, Jack, and Olivia Meadowcroft, Mary Brown, Tori and Michael Adams, and Juliet Irizarry; and 3 great-grandsons, Michael & Madden Brown, and Carter Meadowcroft.
Viewing will be held from 6-8 pm, Wednesday, September 29, 2021, in Pippin Funeral Home, Inc., 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE, and 10am-12noon on Thursday, September 30, 2021, with Services to follow at 12 noon. Burial will be held at 2:00pm, in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
