James Harris Obituary

James Paige Harris, “Uncle Paige” was born March 30, 1943, the second of six children to Mr. Jenepher and Mrs. Edith Harris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He departed this life on March 9, 2024, just shy of his 81st birthday.

While Uncle Paige had some developmental challenges, it never stopped him from being a mischievous child. He was very independent and often would go out alone on long walks in West Philly and local police would escort him back.

Uncle Paige was well known and loved by all in the 300 block of North 61st Street and became a hard-working citizen, holding down jobs at the neighborhood beer distributor, cleaning snow and washing cars to earn money. He was regarded as the “Mayor” of 61st Street because everyone knew him and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help family and neighbors.

After his Uncle Jimmy died in 2014, Paige moved to Dover to live with his youngest brother, Doyne and his family. He became the “watchdog” sitting on the front porch observing the neighborhood and always making sure the house was tidy and the blinds closed at night.

Eventually he became a member of Modern Maturity Adult Care Center where he looked forward to going every morning to be with, “The old people!” His nieces and nephews often joked with him and reminded him that he was the old people. Paige also loved going to the casinos in Atlantic City and later in Dover. He loved watching old Westerns and Kung Fu. He had a love of old cars and Heatwave was his favorite song.

He had a great sense of humor and gave nicknames to many who were dear to him.

Paige was predeceased by his parents, only sister, Carole Ann Harris, brothers Robert Jenepher Harris and Gary Wilbur Harris and sister-in-law, Janet Harris. He is survived by brothers, George Wesley ”Ghulam” Harris (Shirley), Phila., PA and Doyne Luther Harris, Dover, DE; sisters-in law, Theresa Harris, Horsham, PA and Ellen Harris, Mississippi. He is survived by several nieces and nephews as well as several great-nieces and great nephews.
