Harry Kinard Obituary

Harry Q. “Doc” Kinard, of Odessa, Delaware was born on January 18, 1953 in El Monte, CA. He was 73 years old. He was called Home on April 17, 2026 while sleeping peacefully at home. He was resilient, strong, and brave.

Dad was raised in Baker, LA, just outside of Baton Rouge. After high school he attended William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS where he earned a B.A. in physical education. He went on to serve his country, that he loved so much, in the U.S. Air Force and saw many states and countries along the way. He settled in many places, but Baton Rouge would always be “home”. He had a love and passion for sports, in which the military provided him with many opportunities to display his athleticism. He officiated high school and college sporting events, worked with P.A.L. as a boxing coach, and played minor league baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Terrapins, and the Indianapolis Indians. Though baseball was his favorite of all sports, he also won the Golden Glove title in Louisiana (1972), in Mississippi (1973), and again in Arkansas (1976). He was no stranger to the golf course, an avid competitor in racquetball, and on any given “down day”, he would have a fishing pole quietly looking for the “big one”. He was the biggest fan of the LSU Tigers and told everyone he “bleeds purple and gold”.

Dad raised his daughters to the best of his ability. He taught us to bait a hook, as well as how to catch a butterfly with a net and the beauty of letting them go. He taught us to tie the perfect “double Windsor knot”, but also how to tie a bow on our Sunday dresses. He taught us that the world has so much more to see and learn from, so we should never be afraid to accept an opportunity to travel. Most importantly, he taught us respect, love for the Lord, and no matter what – take the opportunity to speak to others, because you never know who just needs a “hello” or a kind word in passing.

Daddy read his Bible frequently and knew almost every hymn there is. He loved to sing hymns and enjoyed the gospel music from his favorite singer, Elvis Presley. The last time he attended service was when he drove to Baton Rouge to visit his granddaughter, who herself, is now a member of his original church in Baton Rouge, First Baptist Church. He felt as though he were re-living his younger days and was blessed that his pastime was being re-lived through her. He was even remembered by some of the elders.  He had many friends from many areas of his life; whether through his days of playing or coaching sports, from school, from church, or from his work, he was easily befriended, and carried those friends with him for many, many years. His closest companions in life though, would be those furry, four-legged pups whom he would turn into quite a softy. A puppy was his weakness, but any dog would have him change his voice and give ear rubs for as long as he could. He loved to feed animals or leave food for them to find later and watch in quiet amazement as the deer came cautiously to collect the goods. I suppose it was a hobby he loved once life settled down for him.

I would like to say thank you to Eden Hill Rehabilitation Center for their care over our father since late January. Their consistent efforts in his health and mobility, up until his discharge, have not gone unnoticed. Compassionate Care Hospice delivered the kindness and comfort that we needed Dad to have. Thank you.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Quillie E. Kinard, Wanda K. Kinard (Jesup,GA) and his biological mother, Norma Jean Saulisbury (Vidalia, GA). He is survived by his sisters Paula Woodcock and her spouse Leonard (Venice, FL), Kristi Kinard (Jesup, GA), his brother Klay Kinard and his spouse Sonia (Jesup, GA); two  daughters Rebecca Collins and her spouse Dale (Milford) and Britainie Dill and her significant other John Raudenbush (Odessa); his son Micah C.
