Harriett A. Purnell, 93, of Wyoming, DE transitioned to Heaven on Sunday April 6, 2025 surrounded by those she loved. Harriett was born in Milford, DE on October 1, 1931 and was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Thomas A. Purnell.
Harriett graduated from Milford High School in 1949 and obtained an associate’s degree in applied science at Delaware Technical and Community College in 1972. She later went on to receive a Bachelors of Executive Secretarial Technology at Delaware State College in 1976.
Harriett was honored as the first employee hired to assist the Board of Trustees and College Administrators in the establishment of Delaware Technical and Community College. She completed a total of 31 years with the college, retiring in 1994. Her attitude toward life and learning, along with her sense of humor were qualities that earned her the respect and admiration of her peers. After retirement she served as a volunteer at Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus until 2016. She was a member of Life Church in Dover.
Harriett had no children of her own, but her legacy lives on through the multiple lives she touched. Known as “Aunt Harriett” to all, she was blessing to all she met. She is survived by nieces Deborah Plack, Harriett Desmond, Susan Wengel, and nephews Michael Brittingham and Robert Brittingham, along with multiple great nieces and nephews. Special recognition goes to Carol Gratton, who was her care giver for six years. She is remembered for her love of animals, traveling, and painting. She also loved the music of Frank Sinatra, whom she was able to meet on multiple occasions. Friends and family were always welcomed to relax around the pool or help her cheer on her favorite football team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Her laughter and wit will be missed.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 11:00 A.M at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, Delaware 19934 where friends may call beginning at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
