George Emberger Obituary

George “Gerry” Henry Emberger    March 13, 1935 - May 1, 2026

George “Gerry” Henry Emberger was born on March 13, 1935, at 9:30 am to parents, George and Mary (Gordon) Emberger, in Philadelphia, PA.

Gerry was a storyteller, often bringing his audience to laughter. Many of Gerry’s stories highlighted his childhood with his parents, family dogs, horses, childhood friends, and serving in the U.S. Army.

In July of 1956, Gerry married Mary Dougherty and became a member of a large family. Gerry shared many adventures with his wife and in-laws. One of his greatest adventures was fatherhood. Gerry and Mary had several children: Gerald (Maryanne), Michael (Eileen), Eleanor (Vincent), Glenn (Sue), Donna and twins George and Eleanor (premature, who passed away shortly after birth). Gerry and Mary raised their children in the Tacony neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. They later moved to the Burholme section of Philadelphia until Mary passed away in 1995. Gerry is predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Mary, and his children, George, Eleanor, Donna, Jerry, and Eleanor. Gerry found love again and on December 30, 1995, he married Carolyn Dougherty (nee Johnson). Gerry and Carolyn started their married life in Audubon, NJ before retiring to Dover, DE. Gerry enjoyed traveling and would frequently share about his trips to Ireland, Vermont, and even the Kentucky Derby.

Gerry worked for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Philadelphia, PA where he worked in the kitchen, laundry services and anywhere else he was needed. After retiring from his service at Little Sisters, Gerry found a new purpose driving for Enterprise when he moved to Dover. Gerry was a great driver, knew the sights well and always had a relevant story to share with his passengers.

Gerry was an excellent cook and always found ways to extend hospitality to his family, friends and community. When he wasn’t making sure you were well fed, he was raving about his grandchildren and great grandchildren or telling a humorous or heartfelt story from his life.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Carolyn; his children Michael and Glenn, as well as his stepchildren Thomas Dougherty, Douglas Dougherty (Stephanie), Shawn Dougherty, and Heather D’Andrea (Brian); and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was loved and adored by many.

Gerry lived the life of a servant. In whatever role he was in, he was always ensuring the care of others. Gerry will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a protective and devoted grandfather and great grandfather, a faithful friend, a dedicated employee and volunteer, an encouraging mentor, and a world changing storyteller.
