Gary Lee Lewis

Gary Lee Lewis, 46, of Harrington, Delaware, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 18, 2026, after a courageous battle with end-stage renal failure. He was surrounded by the love of his family, including his devoted wife of 22 years, Dana Lewis, and their children, Joseph Lee Lewis, Nicholas Scott Lewis, and Kimberly Rose Lewis, all of Harrington.

Born and raised in Harrington, Gary was a proud member and lifelong supporter of the Lake Forest community. As a student at Lake Forest High School, he proudly played football and often reminisced about his team's state championship victory. His love for the Spartans never faded. Years later, he could be found on the sidelines cheering on the team while supporting his son Nick throughout his own football career. Known affectionately as "Mr. Gary" by many students, Gary built countless friendships through his unwavering support of the school and its athletes.

Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, and friend. Throughout his life, he faced more challenges than most—from being born prematurely and enduring multiple back surgeries to his long battle with kidney failure. Yet through every obstacle, Gary remained strong, hardworking, and deeply faithful. He rarely complained, choosing instead to devote himself to his family, his friends, and his faith in God. He was the kind of person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

A lifelong sports fan, Gary was a dedicated San Francisco 49ers supporter and loved watching NASCAR. One of his favorite memories was visiting the International Speedway in Illinois. He also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and spending time in nature. One of the stories he loved sharing was competing in the demolition derby at the Delaware State Fair alongside his brothers. Although his declining health eventually prevented him from enjoying many of these activities, the memories he made remained close to his heart.

Gary dedicated much of his life to providing for his family. He began his career as a truck driver with Atlantic Concrete, where he worked for more than ten years before continuing his career as a sanitation truck driver with Waste Management in Sandtown. Even after his health made full-time work impossible, Gary continued taking on jobs whenever he was able, determined to provide for those he loved. He was an incredibly hardworking and proud man who believed in earning everything he had.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Dana Lewis of Harrington; his children, Michael Ryan Hutchison of Rehoboth Beach, Joseph Lee Lewis, Nicholas Scott Lewis, and Kimberly Rose Lewis, all of Harrington; and his beloved granddaughter, Roselynn Hope Lewis, the daughter of Nicholas Scott Lewis and Cadence Foskey. Becoming a grandfather was one of Gary's greatest joys.

He is also survived by his brothers, Mark Lewis of Harrington and his identical twin brother, Lawrence Lewis of Delaware and California, as well as many cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose lives were forever touched by his kindness. Gary shared a close and loving relationship with his parents-in-law, Wayne and Carol Hutchison of Bridgeville and Lewes. Gary and his family were faithful members of Bethany Church of the Brethren in Farmington, Delaware.

Gary's legacy is one of resilience, loyalty, compassion, and unconditional love. He leaves behind a family who adored him and countless friends who will forever remember his generosity, his strength, his sense of humor, and the unwavering love he had for those around him. Though his time with us was far too short, the memories he created and the lives he touched will live on forever.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 11am, at Bethany Church of the Brethren in Farmington, Delaware. A meal will immediately follow the service, and all who knew and loved Gary are welcome to attend.

In honor of Gary's love for the outdoors, hunting, and all things camouflage, the family kindly invites everyone to wear comfortable camouflage attire as we celebrate the incredible man he was. The service will be held on what would have been Gary's 47th birthday, making it a day to remember his life, share stories, and celebrate the love he gave so freely.
