Dorothy Shingler Obituary

Dorothy Mae Shingler, 90 years old, transitioned on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 9:58 pm surrounded by her loving family.  She was the firstborn child to the late Mack and Nancy Shingler on July 18, 1934, in Santee, S.C.  Her family moved to Washington, DC when she was four years old.

Mother Shingler matriculated through the public school system in Washington, DC. She dropped out of school in the eleventh grade and would return after a 50-year hiatus to earn her High School Diploma at Polytech Adult Education, Woodside Delaware.

Most of her working career was in food services. She owned her own restaurant, and at one time served as a bouncer. Mother Shingler worked for Allied Universal, as a Security Guard, she volunteered as a Foster Grandparent for Lake Forest School District and worked briefly at Polytech Adult Education.  Mother Shingler was the cook and companion to the late Mrs. Alice Sheets Marriott of Marriott Hotels, from which she retired. She was a past Member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  And she was currently an active member of Encouraging My Sister (EMS) Women’s Ministry. Mother Shingler was a tremendous asset to any and every organization she served in. She was a past member of Turner Memorial AMEC, Washington DC, St. James Union AMEC, Frederica, DE, Maranatha Holistic Ministries, Greenwood, DE, and Mt. Pisgah, AMEC, Laurel, DE. She was a gifted compassionate, server and giver of her time, talents and resources. At the time of her passing she was a faithful Member of Agape Temple International Ministries, Inc, Greenwood, DE. She was the Mother of the Church. Over the years she served on the Executive Committee and Deaconess Board, facilitated Bible Study, taught Sunday School, and delivered the Word. She bloomed wherever she was planted and left her fragrance wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Michelle Smith; a son, Damon Pringle; two grandsons: Kevin and Michael; four granddaughters: LaShawn, Michelle, Akea, and Taloria; one great grandson: LeBron; one great granddaughter: Jaliyah; two brothers: Roosevelt and Richard Shingler, three sisters: Maxine Franklin, Diane and Priscilla Shingler. She outlived all of her siblings.

She is survived by her Former Husband Reverend Braven Duffie; one son: Raymond (Martha) Morton, Ohio; five daughters: Dorothea Shingler, Milford, DE, Nadine (Eric) Henry, Harrington, DE, Maria (Warren) Etheridge, Washington, DC, Lajuanda Johnson, Smyrna, GA, and Paulette Smith (with whom she lived), Seaford, DE. 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren. As well as an adopted daughter, Carolyn Richardson, an adopted grandson, Eugene Riddick. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. She was truly one of a kind.

A memorial service for Dorothy Shingler will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at 11:00am at Pippin Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends one hour prior.
