Doris Greene Obituary

DOVER - Doris M. Greene, formerly of Felton, DE and affectionately known to many as “The Queen”, passed away on Mother’s Day, May 9, 2021 at State Street Assisted Living with her children by her side.  Doris had battled the effects of Alzheimer’s related dementia for almost 10 years.

She was born in Frederica, DE to the late Walter B. and Ruth Moore and grew up in Camden-Wyoming where her parents owned and operated Moore’s Luncheonette.  She attended Whatcoat Methodist Church and was a proud graduate of Caesar Rodney High School - Class of 56.

Besides growing up working in her parents’ store, Doris also worked for the phone company until she and her husband settled in Felton and began their family.  As a working mother, she drove a school bus and worked as a teacher’s aide at Lake Forest North Elementary until the early 80’s.  She was a secretary at Dover Leasing for several years, a receptionist at WSFS bank in downtown Dover and retired from Polytech School District in 2005 after serving as the guidance secretary for approximately 15 years.

Church, family, friends, socializing and music were Doris’s main interests.  She was a member of the Felton United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.  She additionally sang in several different gospel and church groups.  As a gifted soprano, she was often asked to sing at weddings and funerals by those closest to her.

In addition to her parents, Doris was also preceded in death by her brothers  and sisters-in-law, “Reds” and Doris Moore, Russell and Ruth Moore,  and “Whitey” and Helen Moore.  Her beloved husband of 60 years, Philip Greene, who gave her the nickname that would follow her for the rest of her life, passed in January of 2017.

She is survived by her children Linda Miller and husband, Rusty, of Greenwood, John Greene, of Dover, Pam Hobbs and her husband Eric of Viola and David Greene and wife, Heidi, of Dover; grandchildren, Cody, Jayden and Alex Miller, Olivia and Alexandra Hobbs, Mason, Cole and Chase Greene and Danny Greene; brother-in-law Joe Greene and wife JoAnn of Springfield, MO; a host of nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law Kathy Joseph of Frederica; and an extended family of friends.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm Friday, May 14, 2021 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave, Wyoming.  Burial will take place at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 11am.  A Celebration of Life Service and time of fellowship will follow at Pizzadili Winery, 1683 Peach Basket Road, Felton beginning at 12pm.

Doris’s children wish to thank the staff and residents of State Street Assisted Living and the Memory Care Unit there for the love and compassion they showed their mother during the 2 ½ years she lived with them.  A special debt of gratitude is owed to her angel on earth, Barbara Powell.  Flowers were dearly loved by Doris, but donations can also be made to the Felton United Methodist Church at PO Box 247, Felton, DE 19943. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com .
