Dolores “Dee” Davis, a devoted mother, compassionate nurse and lifelong adventurer, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Dover, Delaware, at the age of 91.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 18, 1934, Dee was known from an early age for her spirit sharp wit and strong convictions. Although her birth certificate read “Mildred Dolores,” she remained unaware of the official name order until after marriage-by then “Dee” had already become the name everyone knew and loved.
A 1952 graduate of Towson High School, Dee was remembered by classmates as “a true believer in freedom of speech.” Her commitment to service and care for others led her to pursue nursing, earning her associate degree in 1978 and her bachelor’s in 1987. Dee spent her entire 21-year nursing career at Johns Hopkins Hospital, working in general surgery, cardiac care, and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) before retiring in 1999.
In retirement, Dee embraced life fully-traveling the world, exploring national parks, and making memories with family and friends. She was a proud member of the National Park Service and Bel Air Presbyterian Church, where her generosity and warmth left a lasting impression.
She had a deep love for animals-especially dogs, wolves, and bears-and was known to fiercely support wildlife conservation efforts. Dee also enjoyed playing cards, cheering on the Orioles and Ravens (though no one dared call during a Ravens game), watching old Westerns, hosting lively gatherings, and soaking up the sun at the beach. Her motto seemed to be “the more the merrier,” and her door -and heart-were always open.
Dee was predeceased by her beloved sister, Eva Vinson. She is survived by her children: Donna Powell of Elkton, MD; Stephen Davis of Harrisburg, PA; and Kathy Tompkins of Dover, DE; grandchildren Jennifer Staley, Megan Speranza, and Douglas Falasco; great grandchildren Zeven Staley, Echo Staley, Jett Speranza and Rocco Speranza; and her cherished niece, Eva Marie Vinson.
In keeping with her wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Park Foundation or Defenders of Wildlife, honoring her love for nature and her commitment to protecting it.
Dee will be remembered for her kindness, her fierce love of family, and her unshakable sense of humor. She lived her life boldly-and leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and joy.
