Daniel Layton Russum

Daniel (Danny) Layton Russum, 76, of Houston, DE passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Danny was born October 3, 1948, the eldest son of the late Elmer L. Russum and Sarah Evelyn (Lord) Layton.  In 1967, Danny married his high-school sweetheart and soon started a family.  Danny worked as a carpenter alongside his father-in-law, was a parts counter salesman and machine shop mechanic at the former Watkins NAPA store in Dover before becoming a UPS sorter and delivery driver for 15-years where he retired and became a self-employed chicken farmer and equipment operator.  Over the last few years, he and his wife operated a feed, thrift & U-Haul shop and he also assisted his son with doing water system checks. Danny’s first love and mode of transportation was his horse, Shady.  His love of horses was a constant in his life as he owned and raised several along with ponies, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats.  He enjoyed deer hunting with his son, grandsons, long-time family friend, Joe Gary, and his son, Jeff.  Danny also enjoyed attending tractor pulls, horse pulls, rodeos, farm shows and horse and livestock auctions.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Jacquelyn (Jackie) Vincent in 2019.

He is survived by his wife of 57-years, Janet R. (Brown) Russum; his two daughters, Dawn Catalano and Dina Hicks, and son Dustan Russum; and his three brothers Douglas Russum,  David Russum, and Dennis Russum and his wife Heidi; 9 grandchildren, Renay Yeomans (Bryan), Melvyn Miller, Corey Miller, JC Clough (Caitlin), Layton Clough,   Cree Hicks (Morgan), Katelan Russum (Josh), Dustan (Buck) Russum, and Rykar Russum; and 10 great grandchildren, Noah Edge, Madison Miller, Greyson Miller, Kensington Yeomans, Thomas Clough, Ruby Miller, Paisley Travers, Priscilla Yeomans, Jaxson Hicks and JR Clough.

Friends and family may call from 4 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave, Wyoming, DE with a memorial service to be held at 7:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware State Fair, P.O. Box 28, Harrington, DE 19952 for the Horse Pull Competition in Memory of Danny Russum.
