Carlos “Peter” Pettyjohn was born on September 27, 1964, in Seaford, Delaware, to the late Elsie Henderson Pettyjohn and Lemuel Pettyjohn. He passed away suddenly on March 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service to his community.
Carlos graduated from Woodbridge High School in Bridgeville, Delaware. He began his working life at Rapa Scrapple in Bridgeville but soon transitioned into construction as a heavy equipment operator—a role he proudly described as an “earth mover.” He was instrumental in helping build Route 1, the major roadway that connects Wilmington and Dover. Known as a “jack of all trades,” Carlos used his extraordinary skill with his hands to repair cars, lawnmowers—anything with an engine—for neighbors and beyond. He also renovated homes for those in need, demonstrating his devotion to helping others in practical and meaningful ways.
Above all, Carlos’s heart was captured by his faith. He dedicated his life to Christ and was a member of Beacon Lighthouse in Hartley, Delaware. Blessed with an infectious smile and welcoming spirit, he never met a stranger. His genuine warmth, generosity, and compassion left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Carlos was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Vanessa Pettyjohn, and his brothers, Maurice Pettyjohn and Gary Pettyjohn. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving son, Carlos Pettyjohn of Seaford; three grandchildren, Iay (Tre) Sauls III, Irieayana Sauls, and Brandon Sauls; and three sisters, Mary Pettyjohn of Dover, Charletta Pettyjohn Johnson (Sylvester) of Bear, and Lavelda Pettyjohn of Dover. He is also survived by his special friend, Claudette Glass, along with her children and grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, a great niece and great nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever treasure his kindness and generosity.
Carlos “Peter” Pettyjohn lived a life of service, humility, and unbounded love. As we celebrate his life, we honor the example he set—of hard work, neighborly care, and faith in action. His memory will forever be a blessing to those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity Church of the Living God, 425 W. Division Street, Dover, DE.
