Bertha Welch Obituary

Our beloved Bertha E. Welch, "Bess" passed away in April 2023 at her home in Lewes, DE. She lived on this earth for 80 years.

Bess was born in Delbarton, WV. She was the daughter of the late Henry P. Evans and Ocie Sheppard Evans.

She often told wonderful stories of her adventures and experiences growing up in the countryside of West Virginia with her brothers and sisters. Also, her loving bond with her mother.

Recently, Bess shared a story that 20+ years after her mom passed, she was visiting her hometown and was amazed as she noticed her mom’s flower garden thriving and still vibrant on the hill. She recalled she smiled and said "mom is still attending to her garden from heaven"

Since Bess was a young girl, she had a strong faith in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit which led her to convert to Catholicism, the same Catholic faith she chose to raise her children. As a mother herself, Bess also had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary. Her faith guided and comforted her throughout her life.

As a teenager she moved to Wilmington DE, where family members lived. Bess valued education. Her curious, healthy, ambitious, nature led to her being self-taught in various subjects, including developing her artistic talents and business knowledge. She was courageous, a hard worker, and believed in fully participating in life.

Like her mother Bess loved to garden, cultivating varieties of flowers like roses, colorful tulips and carnations to trees like maple, dogwood and cherry trees. Other hobbies she loved include; production of porcelain dolls, cooking, painting, playing cards with her grandkids, enjoying the beach and walking the boardwalk, vacationing in Florida, as well as the company of her pets.

Our lovely Bess tremendously enjoyed sharing her warmth, home, fun loving spirit, and delicious soul food with her friends and family.

Bess' vocations included: the proud mother of 5 children, porcelain doll production and china painting store and how to classes, a home cleaning business, Mary Kay beauty consultant, Bess retired from Cape Henlopen School District after 11 years of service as a school bus driver and a bus monitor for special needs children.

When telling a story about her retirement, she articulated how she felt honored so many colleagues attended her retirement celebration. Her heart was touched. In so many ways throughout Bess' life she shared her talents and brought joy to many people’s lives.

Bess cherished and loved her family dearly. She was a wonderful mother, mommom, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Bess is survived by her two daughters Michelle Scorziello of Lewes De. And Mary Scorziello of Bradenton Fl. Her son Roger Scorziello (Jennifer) of Wilmington De. Her sister Alice Blankenship (Junior) of Seaford De. Her grandchildren Brittney Kessler, Kyle Kessler, Thomas Kessler, and Julia Stabley of Lewes De. Jennifer Scorziello of Los Angeles Ca. Matthew Scorziello of Lakeland Fl. Danielle Piccolomini of Chicago. Christopher Scorziello of Wilmington De. David Piccolomini of Brooklyn NY. Brian Piccolomini and family of Wilmington. As well as numerous nieces, nephew.
