Bernetta “Cookie” Jackson, 69, of Dover, Delaware passed peacefully on September 16, 2020 surrounded by her husband, children and family at her home in Lake Shore Village.
Bernetta was the oldest of 8 children. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 9, 1950 to the late Walena Hodges and John Washington. As a girl, Bernetta attended PS 64 in Brooklyn, NY, Maxwell High School in Brooklyn, NY and later went on to receive her High School Equivalency Diploma. One of Bernetta’s dreams and greatest accomplishments was when she received her certification as an Executive Secretary from Washington Business Institute.
Bernetta then went to work as a secretary for the District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, NY for two years and Fort Wadsworth Military Base in Staten Island, NY for two years. She was a devoted housewife and caretaker for many children, including her grandchildren.
Bernetta was a lover of family, but most of all, she loved the Lord. She was a woman of great faith and servitude. Bernetta was a faithful member of Love of Jesus Family Church in Staten Island, NY where she was very active in ministry. She was a member of the choir, a nursery school teacher and was an ordained Deaconess.
Anyone who knew Bernetta knew her to be a selfless person. She always gave of herself, her time, and her wisdom. She was a woman of great virtue, class and humility. She had a real reverence for the Lord and her life was a testament of God’s grace, love and mercy. She was a true minister of the Gospel and brought many to Christ.
Bernetta had the heart of a giver. She sheltered the homeless, fed the hungry, clothed the needy, visited those that were sick and in prison. She prayed for those who couldn’t pray for themselves, mourned with those who mourned and rejoiced with those who rejoiced.
Bernetta was a devoted wife and a loving mother and a faithful sister and friend. Her life affected the lives of so many and she will be forever imprinted in our hearts.
Bernetta is preceded in death by her parents Walena Hodges and John Washington; her two brothers John “Johnny” Washington and Gregory “Boo Boo” Washington and by two sisters, Sylvia Totten and Deborah Taylor.
Bernetta is survived by her 3 siblings: Bernard Totten, Yvonne Totten and Vanessa Tranquil. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving husband of 39 years, William Jackson; their 3 children: Yolanda Galloway, Dana Jackson and William Jackson, Jr.; her eldest children from her previous marriage: Renee Clerk, Sterling Clerk and Troy Clerk; her daughter in law Laura Clerk, son in law Glen Galloway; 19 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 4 brother in laws; 4 sister in laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
