Barbara Yvonne Spratley was born on October 4, 1937 in Northampton County, Virginia to Laura Collins and Alfred Spratley. She passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2025 after a long illness.
Barbara attended public school in Northampton County, Virginia. After moving and settling in New York, she obtained her GED. She worked various jobs in her early years. She retired from Pilgrim State Hospital in New York after working there for over 30 years. When she retired, she worked part time for the Wyandanch School District bus company as a bus monitor for a few years. She also worked for the Board of Elections as a Poll Worker for a few elections.
Barbara was a member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in Amityville, New York for over 20 years and was a member of the Usher Board. She also was a member of the Eastern Star in New York. In 2005 Barbara moved to Delaware to be near her sister Gloria Reddick and she joined Calvary Baptist Church shortly after. At Calvary, Barbara was a member of the Serenity Choir, The Chalcedony Jewel Group, and attended noon day bible study. She was particularly fond of the Mighty Men of Song and enjoyed their singing tremendously. She faithfully attended Calvary Baptist Church until her hearing loss became severe.
Barbara was predeceased by her son Russell Spratley Sr., her sister Doris Lester, and her brothers-in-law Handsome Lester, and Tomey Reddick, and her nephew Alonzo Reddick.
Her surviving family will cherish her loving memories: her children, son Renwick Spratley Sr. and daughter Jeanette Burgess; her sister Gloria Reddick; also, her nieces and nephews: Clementine Wilson-Ellis, Gregory Reddick (Laura), Penelope Tatum (Eddie); grandchildren: Latasha and Tracey King, Russell Jr. and Wayne Spratley, Renwick Spratley Jr., Jalisha Timmons; plus, many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews as well as her longtime friends Mary Dinkins and Mergerta Miller.
She will dearly be missed by all.
A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 5, 2025 at Calvary Baptist Church, 410 Fulton Street at Queen Street, Dover, DE 19904 where there will be a viewing from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Friday. Burial will follow in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. Online condolences may be made via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
