Lila May Childres

    Lila May Childres, of Magnolia, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 26, 2018, in the Seasons Hospice Unit at Christiana Hospital. She was 86.

    Lila was born, August 25, 1931, in Lead, South Dakota, to the late, Lee & Bernice (Lester) Washburn. She attended school there until Dec.1948, then moved to Rapid City, South Dakota; where she graduated from High School in 1949. She was very active with the high school band, chorus, & debate team.

    In 1951, Lila married Lyle D. Kirk, had two children & was widowed in 1958. She was married again in 1960 to Dennis Carl Childres and was blessed with two more children. They had a loving marriage which lasted 48 years,despite him developing  severe heart trouble at age 38, which he battled  until his death in 2008. Dennis was a Sgt. In the United States Air Force, and had served proudly for over 21 years.

   As a result of his illness, they sold their home in Delaware, and relocated to Panama City, Florida, and began flea marketing. They opened a little shop there in a house that Lila &  Dennis remodled, and continued  for several years.

  In 1985, they moved back to Delaware, and Lila joined the American Contract Bridge League. She earned her Bronze Life Master in Bridge, and also continued flea marketing until Dennis’ death.

    She was an active member of the NCO Wives Club, and was assistant treasurer & chairman of many activities during her first stay in Dover. The wives club created a show for the NCO Club & Lila created a number in the show called: “Doing what comes naturally”, with 15 girls in the act. It was a big hit & they were asked to repeat it for the Service Club.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lyle Kirk(1958) and Dennis Childres(2008); brothers, Lester, Keith, & Clifford Washburn; a sister, Pearl Washburn Martin; and 2 grandchildren, Frank & Sara Kirk.

    Lila is survived by her children, Rodney Lee Kirk, Cynthia Anne Kirk Goertz, Charisse Childres Stanley,  and Kelli J. Childres  Walton. She is also survived by 14 grandsons, and 9 great-grandchildren.

   Funeral Services will be held 4 pm, Monday, March 5, 2018, in Pippin Funeral Home, Inc., 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE; where family and friends may view from 2-4 pm.  Burial is at 11 am, Tuesday, March 6, 2018 in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
