Judith Harreld (Harreld) Taylor

Judith Harreld Taylor age 76 of Dover passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015. She was born August 18, 1938, in Owensboro, KY, a daughter of the late William Grady Harreld, Jr. and Susie Jagoe Harreld.

 Judy graduated from Owensboro High School and received an associate’s degree from Stephens College before earning her teaching degree from the University of Kentucky. While at UK she was a tutor for the UK football team, where she met her husband Howard. Following graduation Judy taught two years as a first grade teacher in Lexington KY before embarking on her 28 year adventure as an Air Force wife. Together she and Howard lived in Del Rio, TX; Dover; Ft Walton Beach, FL; Lompac, CA; Montgomery, AL; Bloomington, IN; Oklahoma City, OK; Tokyo, Japan; and back to Dover, DE.

While in Tokyo she tutored Japanese engineers in conversational English and traveled the Pacific. She and Howard made Dover their home following his retirement in 1992. Judy worked for Catholic Charities as a social worker for 12 years in Dover. Judy was an avid golfer who shot her first hole in one at the age of 16 at the Owensboro Country Club; her second while playing with her son, Brad at Vandenberg AFB and her third at Maple Dale CC in Dover.  She was the women’s Club Champion at Vandenberg AFB, Tinker AFB, and Dover AFB.  She served as president of the Maple Dale Women’s golf Association.  Judy enjoyed quilt making, sewing, cross stitch, petit point, knitting and all arts and crafts.  A prolific gardener, she was a member of the Sprig and Twig Garden Club.  She loved to travel, and enjoyed time spent at the Sea Pines Plantation in Hilton Head, SC overlooking hole number nine.  Full of boundless energy she followed all major sports was a proud supporter of the Kentucky Wildcats and enjoyed all the sports her grandchildren played.

            Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Howard E. Taylor; her son Howard Bradley Taylor and his wife Kristi of Columbia, SC, her daughter, Rebecca T. Howerin and her husband John of Dover, DE; her grandchildren; Madison Taylor, Callahan Taylor, Paxton Taylor, Cassetty Howerin, and Alexis Howerin; her sisters and a brother; Susan Wells and husband Ronnie of Spice Knob, KY; William Grady Harreld, III and wife Carole, and Camilla Taylor and husband Glenn all of Owensboro, KY; and a host of nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by a really special but annoying cat named Sid the Second!

            A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where a gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m.  Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to USO Delaware 500 Purple Heart Way Dover Air Force Base 19902.  Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com
