James C Stewart, Sr.

     James Curtis Stewart Sr. of Harrington went home to be with the Lord on July 9, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 73.

     He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 52 years, Janet E. Stewart; five children, Donald K. Smith of Harrington, Larry A. Smith (Venessa) of Leesville, LA, Pearl E. Stewart of Plainfield, NJ; Virginia Derrickson (Michael) of Harrington, and James C. Stewart Jr. (LaTanya) of Elkton, MD; a son-in-law, Jeff A Deshields of Greenwood, DE, His mother, Pearline Gatling of Norfolk, VA, one brother, Jesse Lee Gatling, Jr. of Norfolk, VA, one sister, Michelle Gordon (William) of Virginia Beach, VA; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father Jesse Lee Gatling Sr. and his daughter Shelley E. Deshields.

     James, affectionately known as Tom Thumb, was born and raised in Ahoskie, NC.

     Tom was a mentor to many in the racehorse community.  His warm, gentle nature attracted many to him.  He always had a kind word to offer.  His passion for horses started at an early age.  He became his own success story.  He followed his dream of becoming a trainer, driver and owner of Standardbred horses for over 30 years. You would find him most days at James Stewart Stables whistling while he worked. 

     He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, shooting pool, playing cards and winning at every game of checkers.  His favorite pass time was finding things to fix with “black electrical tape.” 

     He will be remembered by his contagious and friendly smile.

Funeral Services will take place 12 noon, Saturday, July 16, 2016, in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 190 Roughly Hill Road, Harrington; where family and friends may view from 10 am - 12 noon.
