Eleanor Madeline Cunningham, of Dover, passed away on Wednesday May 20, 2015 at Silver Lake Nursing Home, surrounded by the love of her family.  She was 92 years old.  Eleanor was born on October 12, 1922, in Pennsylvania, to the late David and Faye Smeltz.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond “Snowball” Holwig; sister Lena Dube; and daughter, Ann Pilarek.

Eleanor was an amazing lady and she lived an extraordinary life.  She was born and raised poor, married at a young age, and became a widow soon after, when her new groom went off to war, and was killed in action.  She raised a young daughter by herself, and enjoyed a long and successful career with U.S. Air Airlines, traveling the world.  She belonged to many clubs and organizations, genuinely loved football and golf, walked 3 miles every day, and enjoyed an occasional cold beer.  Most of all Eleanor will be remembered for her incredible spirit and words of wisdom that she passed down to those she cared for.  She believed in giving to charity, exercising daily, caring for those in need, being kind, loving your family no matter what, learning from your mistakes, but continuing to move forward, and never letting your spirit be broken.

Eleanor leaves behind to cherish her memories, her dachshund, Hailey; nieces and nephews, Pamela Pippin (Wayne), Christopher Dube (Shari), Craig Dube, and Jennifer Hroncich; 11 great nieces and nephews; 7 great great nieces and nephews, and several cousins in PA.

The family wishes to extend appreciation to the staff at Silver Lake Center, for their care, and compassion, during her illness.

A Memorial Service will take place at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, 27 May 2015, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE 19934. Friends may gather one hour prior.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be sent to the First State Animal Shelter and SPCA, 32 Shelter Drive, Camden, Delaware 19934. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
