Dorothy Irene Garthwaite

October 7, 2015 ~ October 7, 2015

Dorothy Irene Garthwaite passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at home.  She was born on March 23, 1927 in Montgomery, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Margaret and Bruce Kline.

“Dot” was a 1945 graduate of Bloomsburg High School in Pennsylvania.  She moved with her husband and young family to Dover in 1953.  Along with being a devoted homemaker, Dot was employed by Kent General Hospital and then became a medical secretary for a local physician.  She later received her real estate license and joined her husband in his real estate office, Garthwaite Realty.

Dot, known as Mimi by her grandchildren, was devoted to her tight-knit family and many friends.  She loved life and was known for her keen sense of humor.  She enjoyed fishing with her husband, John, and maintained that she always caught the “bigger” fish.  There was no puzzle Dot couldn’t solve. She also enjoyed cards, television game shows, knitting, and entertaining.  A fashionable dresser, she especially loved shopping for the perfect pair of shoes.  She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a Lady Elk.  She attended Wesley United Methodist Church.

Dorothy is predeceased by eight brothers and four sisters and a son-in-law, John T. Bailey.  She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, John F. Garthwaite of Dover, Delaware; daughter, Linda G. Bailey and son, John R. Garthwaite, both of Dover, Delaware; sister Evelyn Hendershot of New Jersey; granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and Scott Torgerson of Camden-Wyoming, Delaware; and great grandchildren Cullen, Zachary, and Nathan along with many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, October 11 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 12 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Although flowers would be appreciated, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com
