Alton Thomas Gibbs, Jr.

Alton Thomas Gibbs, Jr passed away peacefully September 20, 2016 in Christiana Hospital after a lengthy illness.  JR, as he was commonly known, was born July 5, 1949 in Dover, to parents Alton T. and Eunice Gibbs.

After graduating in 1968 from Felton High School, JR served for a brief time in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in Korea. After leaving the military, he spent the early part of his career as a skilled carpenter and self-employed building contractor.  JR went on to work as a Construction Inspector for the US Department of Agriculture Rural Development, from which he recently retired. 

JR loved spending time outdoors with family and friends. His interests included crabbing, fishing, skiing and golfing.  JR enjoyed attending local sporting events, supporting the Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Ravens and University of Delaware Basketball. One of his favorite activities was attending the many local crab feasts and festivals. Photography was a lifelong hobby and his camera was never far from reach.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur Gibbs and infant son, Brian Gibbs.  JR is survived by his daughter, Andrea (Brian) Knutzen of Trophy Club, Texas, two brothers and two sisters, George Engelhardt of Viola,  Riley (Debbie) of Millsboro,  Mary (Ricky) Anderson, of Dover, and Thelma “Bunny” (Bartos) Hrupsa, of Felton, granddaughter Blakely Knutzen of Trophy Club, TX, former stepson, Eric Lefort of Felton,  and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2016 at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, DE.
